Everything you need to know about car safety checks NSW

If you’re based in NSW and need to register your car, you’ve probably heard that you’ll need either a pink slip or a blue slip. But what are they? Which one do you need? And how do you organise the right slip for your car?

We’ve got the low down on pink slips, blues slips and organising all of the safety checks you need to get registered in NSW.

What is a pink slip?

A pink slip (or eSafety) is an official safety inspection report that is carried out at an "authorised inspection station". The mechanic will run a number of checks on your vehicle to verify that your car is in roadworthy condition for registration.

“If you live in NSW and your car is more than five years old you will likely need a pink slip before you can register your vehicle”

When do I need a pink slip?

If you live in NSW and your car is more than five years old you will likely need a pink slip before you can register your vehicle. Your renewal registration notice will state whether or not you are required to book in for your pink slip.

NOTE: Trailers that weigh less than 251 kg and caravans with a tare weight of less than 411 kg do not require a pink slip.

How much does a pink slip cost?

A vehicle safety check (pink slip) cost is determined by the New South Wales government.

See the current maximum fees for a pink slip here: NSW Gov: Vehicle Safety check and inspection fees.

How do I get a pink slip?

Once a registered mechanic has gone through all of the pink slip safety checks, they will determine whether your car has passed or failed.

If your vehicle passes, your mechanic will send a full report to Transport for NSW electronically.

If your vehicle fails the pink slip, you’ll receive a Repairs Needed report from your mechanic. You’ll have up to 14 days to have the necessary repairs done, after which time the report will expire and you’ll have to book your car in or another pink slip.

Once all the necessary repairs have been made, a follow-up check will confirm that your vehicle meets all of the requirements for a pink slip

What is a blue slip?

A blue slip is an official report that confirms that an unregistered vehicle is safe and ‘meets design and identity standards’. Transport for NSW

When do I need a blue slip?

If you have an unregistered light vehicle in NSW you’ll need a blue slip inspection before you can register.

You may need a blue slip if:

  • Your registration expired more than 3 months ago
  • You brought your vehicle into NSW from another state or overseas.
  • You don’t have number plates for your car
  • Your car was written off but has been approved for re-registration
  • You need to adjust your registration records because you have changed the car significantly eg. put a new engine in.

If you have an unregistered light vehicle in NSW you’ll need a blue slip inspection before you can register.

How much does a blue slip cost?

A safety and identity check (blue slip) cost is determined by the New South Wales government.

See the current maximum fees for a blue slip here: NSW Gov: Vehicle Safety check and inspection fees.

How do I get a blue slip?

Blue slip inspections can only be done at an authorised inspection station and the blue slip is issued by Transport for NSW. Once the inspection is complete the report will remain valid for up to 42 days.  You will be required to  submit your blue slip report to Transport for NSW along with other supporting documentation within the 42 day timeframe after which the report will expire.
